Ion Zupcu's masterfully crafted
silver prints have the look of platinum. For many years a landscape
photographer, Zupcu turned to his now signature style of
emotional still-life images several years ago, becoming both
photographer and sculptor.
It is as if each photograph is a memory,
lingering closely next to others, of the many poignant moments
Mr. Zupcu has known before and after leaving his native Romania
in 1991. Somewhere in each of them, in the tight focus on the
edge of paper, an egg balanced delicately, a solitary flower
leaning from within a bottle, there is a sepia-toned look to the
past, or perhaps it is the future coming into view.
His first serious
investigation into the genre began in 1999 with a series
entitled "Flowers", which was followed by numerous
collections of photographs depicting bottles, fabrics, eggs and
portraits. His latest project is entitled "Works on Paper." Mr. Zupcu prints and sepia-tones all of his own work.
Ion Zupcu's images are Romantic - a result, he says, of being
raised in communist Romania. "There was no modern movement there
in art," he explains. "We studied from the old masters." His
sepia-toned still lifes, all shot in available light, are warm
and intimate.
Since his first
exhibition in 2000, Zupcu’s work has become part of many private
collections throughout the world. His works are now part
of significant collections in the United
States and Romania:
Ialomita County Museum of Art, Romania
The Museum of Fine Arts- Houston, Texas
O' Melveny & Myers LLP Collection
Dayton Art Institute, Ohio
Dennos Museum Center, Michigan
The University of Michigan, Museum of Art
